Avatar
Einer awakens in the central mountain fastness on Bergasa, home of the Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces. This is the longest he has ever remained in one place, especially now that the Shaper incursion has come to an end. Even confined to a planet, there is more than enough to wander to and explore- especially on a world where the entire ecosystem has been sculpted by a psychic bordering demi-god like power. Silvano himself rarely leaves his reflection chamber lately, truly exhausted from the fighting. For now, he is content to let his followers explore their new home, and develop things accordingly. Occasionally, a runner will come down from the mountain peak with small adjustments in how things should be done.

Einer stares at the ceiling from his bed, trying to still the restless energy in his limbs. It’d been too long since he had felt genuinely accepted in a place, but old habits die hard. After a quick check of his chronometer, Einer rolls out of bed. After splashing his face with cool water from the stone basin to wash away some of the grogginess, he makes his way to his favorite isolated outcropping. The sky is still dark, and Einer sits cross legged facing the direction of the approaching sunrise.

The sun is a brilliant yellow-orange and slowly creeps its way up the mountainside, and its warmth quickly follows. Out in the bay, two patrol craft begin their morning rotation, keeping the seas surveyed and safe

Einer enjoys the warmth as it loosens his muscles, but meditation stays out of his grasp. The restlessness had invaded his thoughts. Finally, he exhales in frustration and stands up. “I need something to do,” he says to no one in particular. He leaves the outcropping, looking for any of the SCAF runners or leadership.

“Hello there!” Einer calls, reaching out to stabilize the runner and keep him from falling, “Want some help?”

"Ah thank you! Heading into the lab, clean room only beyond the doors. Everythings so busy with the scouting expedition about to take off"

Einer grabs a few jars, “Scouting expedition? Where to?”

"Balquis, we're going to be recovering some parts. There's a plan to build some kind of big lighthouse or beacon at the top of the mountain, and some satellite pieces there for a more permanent navigation system"

He holds a door open for the runner, “Are they still looking for people to help?”
Avatar
"They are, I think the expedition is meeting in one of the mid mountain planning rooms, they're just briefing while their ship finishes fueling"

Einer collects his sword, shield, and few personal belongings to prepare for the mission. He’s relieved to be stretching his legs and doing something more than meditating on his teachings.

Einer an @Hagen Emeric are both assigned to the mission, or at least the briefing of it, and the meeting is set to take place in the mid level planning chambers of this mountain. Silvano is not expected to attend, but several of his more senior Lieutenants are present.

The door opens, and a big man in his forties enters, looking like he just left a welding rig or climbed out of some maintenance tunnel. His chin shows some stubbles and his curly hair appears to have a fading maroon. He carries a small bowl with the last drops of some earthy smelling fungus stew and a plastic cup smelling like coffee. He sets his back worn toolkit next to a chair and sits down. He glances around, sees unfamiliar faces and quickly takes out his dataslab. After a few seconds, a small holo projector on the man's bright orange vest springs to life, and the words Hagen Emeric Maintenance Crew Freelancer appear in a faint blue on its chest and back.

A free merchant has been set aside for use, stripped down to maximize cargo space. The ship is comfortable though the cargo hold is cavernous, and capable of bringing back almost anytihng you might find. It does not have a name, and is painted a unreflective matte grey, with the supernova symbol of SCAF on the side of its hull, in a dull halo of white

Hagen Emeric 11-Jun-20 03:36 PM
"Why hasn't it been named? First flight?", Hagen asks.

"holdover from the shaper fight" the crew chief says, standing at the ramp "We tended to lose ships like this fairly quickly. It was easier to just kind of move on if there wasnt anything attached to them"

First Flight isn’t a terrible name. It is a new age,” Einer says while walking pass the pair. He goes off to look for some quarters.

There are enough bunks aboard for everyone to have their own small room, even if they are very small , little more than storage closets

“Cozy,” he says with a smile. He tosses his small bag on the bunk and continues to wander the ship.
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 11-Jun-20 08:47 PM
Hagen stows his toolkit and backpack in his room. The pilots words are still in his head; It was easier to just kind of move on if there wasnt anything attached to them. That struck him as cold; the people on those ships had names. Not giving a ship a name because it's flight was condemned seemed cruel to him. He steps out of his room and follows the yellow lines on the floor to engineering. These lines are usually on the walls, but given there were not that many walls left, someone seems to have painted them on the floor. The green line towards the galley cuts the yellow line, and Hagen decides to follow it instead. In front of him, he sees Einer Stjerne walking and looking around. "Hey there", he says to the man wandering in front of him. "First time on a ship stripped down to the point where it reselmbles a steel air bubble more than anything else?"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 11-Jun-20 08:50 PM
Einer grins, “Not necessarily. This one isn’t the worst I’ve ever been on, at least I don’t have to worry about getting lockjaw if I cut myself on the bunk here. I’m Einer, by the way.” He extends his hand in greeting. He’s average in height, with an unremarkable build. The only notable part of his appearance are the starburst tattoos on his face, and the sword and shield strapped to his body.

Hagen Emeric 11-Jun-20 11:17 PM
"I'm Hagen. Nice meeting you", Hagen says, shaking Einers hand. "Nice tat.", he adds as he sees it, and smiley. "Were you part of a gang in a former life?"

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 11-Jun-20 11:28 PM
Einer laughs loudly, “I guess. Gang, cult, monastic order. Any would work. But it’s part of my current life as well.” His laugh subsides, “What did you do before joining Silvano’s experiment?” (edited)

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 12-Jun-20 12:10 AM
“That sounds incredibly fascinating. You’ll have to tell me more about it, I haven’t been to a biodome before. As for me, I spent my time studying and learning. I moved from place to place with my mentor until I,” he pauses a moment, looking for the right word, “graduated. Overall, I kept my head down. I may be one of the few people in the sectors who finds the current situation better than what I was in before the Scream.”
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 12-Jun-20 02:46 AM

"Whatever your field of expertise is, a colony like this one has need for it, and for you, and is a great way to start over, or start at all. My guess would be that the practical side involves that sword of yours. Are you some kind of monk?", Hagen says, scratching his stubbly chin.

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 12-Jun-20 03:20 AM
“I am!” He says grinning widely and hands outstretched, “I adhere to the teachings of the First Facet, Eir. She founded our Order. As for expertise, I’m a middling medic, and decent enough swordsman. Otherwise my main specialty is being convoluted about simple things, my mentor called that philosophy. I try to be more honest.” (edited)

Hagen waves it off with a smile. "There is no dishonesty in having everything pulled out of your nose. Come on", he says and claps Einer on the shoulder. "I'll show you how the galley works" Hagen walks the few meters to the galley and runs Einer through the food dispensers process by letting the machine make a can of coffee. He offers Einer some, pours a mug for himself and takes a sip. "I'm curious. As a... " He pauses, then rephrases. "You said you are on a pilgrimage. What do you seek?"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 12-Jun-20 04:58 AM
“Thank you!” He takes a sip of the coffee, and let’s the smell waft over his face. “I’m embarrassed to guess at how long that would’ve taken me.” He sits back, holding his mug, “I’m looking for enlightenment. Eir teaches us we can find understanding of the universe by understanding the people we live side by side with. The more people you live alongside, the more comprehensive your education is. Before the Scream, it was harder for Facets to finalize their education this way. We had to hide our intentions, and our abilities or risk persecution.” (edited)

I need to hit engineering because I want to be present with the pre flight check ups, maybe I can help, or learn a thing or two. I'll tell you all about my time in a biodome once we are in spike, if you like"

The one day jump to Balquis is a myriad of sensations as the Free Merchant plunges into spike space, and then back out over the failed planet below. There is evidence everywhere of a colony and mercantile culture that had fallen into collapse, even before The Scream. SCAF scouts have been to the failed trade hub a few times, hunting for prized materials in the wrecked vessels below.

Hagen Emeric 12-Jun-20 11:35 PM
Hagen reads the scouts reports, mainly to get an idea of where they should search first. As the ship enters the atmosphere and begins to vibrate from all the micro collisions, a smile slips on Hagens face and he puts his dataslab away. He closes his vest over his overall, puts his helmet on and joins the crew at the ramp.

(+1 for trade hub)
Avatar
Landing at the trade hub you see evidence that another ship was here recently along with what looks like two bodies out in the shipyard area. The merchant circles once before coming in to land just There is a thunderclap of sound and a wall of blown dirt as the three of you materialize at the edge of the trade hub. The wrecks of small system craft, large cargo planes, and the large warehouse row itself are in various states of disrepair. The runways and rocket launch pads are likewise rusted over, exposed to years of the elements without being maintained
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Jun-20 04:06 PM
Einer shakes off the discombobulation from the teleportation. “Have we landed expeditions here before? Those bodies are a little disconcerting.” His hand is resting on the pommel of his sword.
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 13-Jun-20 05:10 PM
"Yes, Bregusan scouts have been here, but their reports did not mention anything about bodies. Anyone who knows of this place can come here and grab stuff, it's absolutely plausible that someone not from SCAF came here and left these bodies. You're a medic, right? Maybe you can tell us more about them once we took a look" Hagens eyes rest on the dark shapes while he speaks. He takes slow steps towards the bodies, now scanning the horizon and larger shadows for movement.

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Jun-20 05:13 PM
“I’ll do what I can. Did you hear if our ship scanned anything in the system?” Einer moves slowly, watching opposite of Hagen.

Hagen Emeric 13-Jun-20 06:16 PM
"I wouldn't know, I was not on the bridge." Hagen turns to Einer. "Tell me... how would you lie a trap out here?"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Jun-20 06:20 PM
Einer pauses, and thinks, “I see what you’re getting at. More disconcertingly, a trap implies something is out here with intelligence, and that we’re potentially worried about something worse than local fauna.”
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 13-Jun-20 06:31 PM
"I'm thinking pirates, smugglers or scavengers, like we are. But then again, I can imagine a lot of scenarios where pirates, smugglers or scavengers piss off in a hurry and leave a couple of bodies behind"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Jun-20 07:45 PM
"I agree. Let's be cautious, and let the First Flight know about what's going on in case we get into trouble." He slides his shield off his back, and settles it onto his arm. The sword remains sheathed.

Approaching the bodies you see one of them is headless. It has been dead for a few days and wearing a combat harness belonging to the Elysium Protectorate (edited)
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Jun-20 10:34 PM
"Not to speak flippantly of the dead, but I think we know how they died." Einer crouches next to the more intact body, looking for any clues.
Avatar
They are wearing EP uniforms and were killed by bladed weapons. There are four shell casings by the wreck of a crashed cargo plane and evidence on the ground of a scuffle , and discarded EP kit. There are also lengths of rope that were cut and evidently not used. Someone was clearly carried away
00:52
The rope is a few days aged , brittle from being in the sun and gently pushed into the dirt
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 12:59 AM
“So much for no one being here. I don’t like the idea of leaving the bodies here, and I worry about the person they carried away.” Einer places a hand on each of the chests in turn, saying a few quiet words.
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 15-Jun-20 01:48 AM
"You can dispose of them if you like, you have at least an hour to kill while I scoop around for the parts I might need", Hagen says. His shoulders untensed with Einers last sentence - who comes back after a kidnapping job? - and he, visually relaxed, begins to look around in the remnants of the trade hubs shipyard, already eyeing parts that peek his interest. "To be honest, I'm kinda glad they already took someone else", he half shouts from around a small heap of debris. "I don't think we can do much for them, but maybe you can find some tracks. Sure, they have a three to five day lead, but if you find something, feel free to search for more. Just dont wander off too far"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 01:49 AM
“I’ll keep my compad on.” Einer looks for anything that might suit for a shovel to dig shallow graves. He also grabs any identification off of the dead body that they may have.
01:51
(I assume that’d take up most or all of the hour if nothing else happens)
Avatar
(yeah i would say so for you Einer. They'd have ID tags with their names, but they were ship NPC's so they didnt have any story significance aside from their jobs, and a clue now)
14:22
There are tracks heading west, and there is some flattened land showing a grav vehicle had passed through, laden down to almost touch the ground with people or cargo
14:23
(Hagen has a really good fix so i think a roll doesnt make sense with what he's doing) Hagen is not able to work with any of the materials in the crashed ships, but from a distance the rocket pads look to be fitted with a lot of the equipment this satellite constellation, and voyage beacon project might need.
14:23
With a little TLC, the rockets might even be able to be launched , and supplies can be picked up from space with a higher degree of safety (edited)

Hagen Emeric 15-Jun-20 05:37 PM
As Einer comes back to where he left Hagen, he only finds parts marked with crosses of chalk and half disassembled pieces scattered around. Hagens markings are easily traceable, and soon he can hear the man, who seems to have wandered off in his search for parts. "Busted as well. No wonder they all died! Can't even install a fucking floodlight", Hagen says, his voice filled with anger and frustration. He crawls out of the crashed ship and marks it with a big X as well. His face lights up as he sees Einer. "Ah, Einer. How'd it go?"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 06:19 PM
Einer wipes dirt and sweat from his brow, “Whoever was here took off in a gravcar so I doubt we’ll be able to find them on foot. Any luck here?”
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 06:42 PM
He sits down heavily, leaning against a piece of metal.
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 15-Jun-20 06:59 PM
"Gravcar? That's weird", Hagen says. "Well, at least you could find something" Hagen looks at the chalk markings around him and shakes his head. He puts a cigarette to his mouth and lights it. "Nothing useful down here. But I could make out some good looking support scaffolding over at the rocket pads", he says, pointing over his shoulder towards some sleek, high silhouettes in the distance. "I saw some solar panels as well. I'd say we take a look."
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 07:00 PM
Einer stretches his arms and stands back up, “Sounds like a plan. Let’s get going.” He sends a quick message to the Flight letting them know that they’re moving.
Avatar
The flight likewise moves closer to the pads, now with its doors shut after you disembark. Three pads stand before you, two of them have rockets that seem to be in decent condition, the third, on the extreme left, has fallen over across one of the runways, and its wreckage was likewise the site of a skirmish

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 08:46 PM
"Do you think we can get those rockets to launch?" Einer is standing at the foot of one, looking up the towering cargo rocket.

Hagen Emeric 15-Jun-20 09:12 PM
"Both? If we're lucky. One for sure" Hagen begins assessing the craft. "Look at that beauty. You can still see the factory paint job! Has to look good on the inside, though", he mumbles to himself, his mind already at work.
21:15
"What's with that fallen one? Worth even taking a closer look at?" He searches for a way in the middle one.

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 09:17 PM
“I’ll go take a look. I can probably tell you if it seems too broken to be of any use. Let me know if you find anything exceptional in these ones!” Einer makes his way to the fallen rocket, inspecting the area for indications of what happened during the skirmish.

Someone was shooting here, shooting a lot, before the grass, paving stones, and dirt are kicked up in a swirl showing the stomps and punches of many hands and feet. A figure lay prone here after a while, likley the victim of this bunches of punches

“Hagen,” Einer calls over the radio, “I’m starting to think whoever lives here may be more violent than we’re prepared to deal with on our own.” His voice is tight as he looks inside the downed rocket for anything useful.
Avatar
The rocket itself is massive, its solar cells have shorn off in the fall and the receptors are broken. Its fuel tank was ruptured and the fuel contents have long since bled into the air or ground.

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 15-Jun-20 10:09 PM
Einer tries to find any indication for a cargo hold.
Avatar
(this rocket would be a total loss, whole thing just sort of tumbled apart, but you've got some clue that some prisoners were taken) On the rocket platform itself, the remaining two rockets seem to be fueled. There is a small bunker close to Einer, with an open but heavy looking door

Would be a shame not to take it", he says with a broad, excited smile.

"We are currently matching the rockets momentum and we will attach several lines to the one we're first working on." He sits in the locker room, showing the steel and rubber cables to Einer. "One of these, this orange one, is the hauling line. It has a parallel line to it, and that's where you'll be. Your job is to accompany the parts along the hauling line towards the cargo bay, and make sure they don't get unwanted momentum. Taking the scrap into the bay is where the most severe injuries occur, and steady moving parts limits this risk immensely"

Pleased with having a legitimate way to help, Einer nods firmly, “You got it, Hagen. Then he dons the vac suit with practiced ease.

Einer stands with the work detail in the depressurized cargo hold. As the door silently opens, he stares out into the star filled void. He silently breathes out, “Eir guide my steps, and light my way.” Then louder, “Let’s get to it.” He steps out into the void, seeking the lines Hagen directed him to.
Avatar
The two lines are color coded, a transit one runs from the airlock to the rocket, while the color coded cargo lines run from the cargo bay to the same rocket. A small handheld motor lets you run up and down the line with ease, though can only be clipped into one at a time. No other workers are outside yet, and Hagen is also not currently out on the wreck, though based on how he was dressed when you saw each other, should be along shortly
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 18-Jun-20 01:10 AM
Hagen exits the air lock and hooks on the transit cable. Einers speaker crackles. "You already found your line, that's great. Get familiar with that pulley, your body has a slight wind up delay because you are getting, well, pulled" Hagen prepares his launch, pausing for a moment. "There is a saying for these kind of jobs. Don't kiss raw space. It means good luck and don't crack your visor. Einer, welcome to your first zero g salvage gig. Don't kiss raw space." He launches himself off the ship, darting grinning towards the rocket. (edited)

The hole takes a few minutes to cut but is done expertly. A perfect rectangle panel floats free, no longer held to the rocket. Inside, additional fuel tanks, rations, spare parts, and motors along with a few components you can’t identify are packed neatly , never having made it to their destination

Einer peeks around Hagen, their helmet lights illuminating the trove inside, “Wow. Everything being packed up so neatly should make the transfer easier.”
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 20-Jun-20 08:51 PM
Hagen moves aside to let Einer see. "Not only that - I can use a lot of this stuff." The unidentifyable parts peek his interest, and he releases his hook to enter the cargo hold. What is this?, he thinks, as he examines the components. His suits sensor registers the change of brightness around him, and the interior light illuminates his confused face, casting a dim reflection on the inside of his visor. The visor is still configured for outer ship work, but now, inside the rocket, the UV filter would only darken his vision without a benefit. He changes the setting, and his reflection, along with his immediate curiosity, fades as his visor brightens. You can figure that out in the First Flights cargo hold, not in this one. Back to work While releasing the crates and components from their transport clamps, Hagen activates his radio to talk to Einer. "Most of this does not need your company as a hauling guide. Rule of thumb is, if its not packaged or bigger than you, you guide it. Else, secure it to a line and give it a good push." He begins to chug crates at Einer (edited)
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 20-Jun-20 08:54 PM
Einer gestured an affirmative, and begins catching the crates. He secures them to the cargo line before sending them back towards the ship. The awkward pieces he sets aside just on the interior side of the cut to keep the flow moving. “Any guesses as to what they were trying to haul into orbit?”

(works for me!) The Final Flight holds station over the next few hours as the supplies and component panels of this cargo rocket are transferred. Some of the containers barely make it onto the deck before splintering, such is their age, but you've been able to keep everything together for the difficult part of the journey. As rocket 1 is stripped down to just a few pieces of floating space junk, the Flight begins signaling for everyone to come back and refresh before tackling the second
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 21-Jun-20 03:47 AM
Hagen exits the airlock and opens his helmet. The soft blow of air turbulences from different, now equalizing air pressures, brushes his face. The ships air is less oxygen saturated than his suits air, and his vision begins to blur. He sits down and lets out a heavy breath and begins to undo the straps of his suit. He looks to Einer, exhaustion showing on his face. "You did very well. You looked a little pale going out, but now you're all red", he says, and smiles for a second.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 21-Jun-20 03:49 AM
Einer likewise removes the helmet, breathing out and spluttering his lips. "I think I started to outpace the suit's climate control toward the end there. Who knew breaking down a rocket into component parts would be hard work?" He throws a hand up in mock exasperation.
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 21-Jun-20 03:56 AM
Hagen gives up on the straps and relaxes all his limbs, his body mirroring the benches shape. "I did" He chin-nods towards the wall mounted water dispenser tube and closes his eyes. "It's the core", he says while letting out a deep breath. "All the twisting and balancing", with another heavy breath.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 21-Jun-20 03:59 AM
"I can see that. You want a cup?" Einer pulls out one of the dispenser's cups and begins filling it. "I'm more used to twisting and balancing and how it applies to sparring. It's a different feeling doing manual labor like that. I don't dislike it."
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 21-Jun-20 04:04 AM
"Certainly, thank you very much" He opens his eyes, one eyebrow suspiciously risen. "Zero G sparring?" He raises his arm to take the cup and sits up straight, accompanied by a semi-theatrical groan. "You do sparring in zero g?"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 21-Jun-20 04:08 AM
Einer passes the cup off, "Er, not often. An instructor put me through it a handful of times just so I knew what it was like. Otherwise it's all been gravity based. These past few hours are easily the longest I've spent in zero-g at a time, though." He begins filling his own cup. "It wasn't anything fantastical. Most of it is trying to leverage your oponent in such away that their boots lose contact or they're not able to find purchase. If you're both loose, it's-" he hesitates, "grittier."
Avatar
Hagen Emeric 21-Jun-20 04:23 AM
Hagen takes the cup, and a sip. The cold water running down his throat vitalizes him, and he chugs down the cup. "Has it payed off?" He stands up to get another cup of water.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 21-Jun-20 04:27 AM
Einer holds his own cup, staring into it as he considers the question. Finally, he says, "I haven't been forced to use that part of my training. I've been in fights, especially after the Scream, but never in zero-G. Most of the time I've just found a way out and seperated myself from the situation. Thankfully it doesn't happen often. What about you? Have you ever had to fight someone without gravity holding you both in place?"

It goes on smooth, no WD-40 needed, which is surprisingly still in use. After several slow moments, the leak is no longer detectable. "Unclear how much gas remains inside, but the leak has stopped" the Final Flight reports

There is a dull thump from within as the spark ignites the remaining gas, and when the panel is cut away, it seems that the cargo inside is singed, but not destroyed. Several small containers, likely to be installed in space craft life support, have different gas mixtures. 80% of them have been breached and likely have been slowly leaking or building up for years, though the breach was only visible in space

(the handle is deformed, but since the rest of it is flush with the floor, basically we need to either fix this, or make some other point where we can grab it)

“I, uh, I’m not sure how these would begin to work.” Einer tries to get a look as far around the tanks as possible, “and I really don’t think it’s a good idea to try and crack them open here. Considering, you know, the whole we’re in vacuum thing. I think we,” he gives a half grin, “by which I mean you, should figure out if we can hook them up to an external power source and transfer them to the FF’s hold. I’d feel better opening them up with a team of doctors rather than just myself and the ship’s medic.”

Einer works on organizing the work detail. Each pod gets a pair of crewman to ferry it over to the First Flight. He’s not taking chances with potentially live cargo.
Avatar
Its a long process to extract the three pods from the rocket and get them safely landed in the cargo bay of the final flight. The workers are keeping their distance, the technology here simply too strange for them to look at for long without feeling uncomfortable

"I do," Einer says, adding, "Lord Mazzio. Emeric and I found enough salvage to get at least a working prototype of his project built, I think. Additionally, it looks like the Protectorate was on Balqis before us, and their expedition ran into trouble. We found dead, mutilated soldiers. But," he continues, "I think the tanks we found on one of the cargo rockets will interest you personally. They potentially contain people, or at least humanoid shaped objects in them. I didn't feel comfortable cracking them open on the First Flight without an equipped medical staff on hand. Plus, like I said, I thought you might take a personal interest in them. I've never seen anything like the tanks, and I'd appreciate your insight."

"I had them moved to Mount Home's medical department. First Flight's captain seemed eager to get them off their ship." Einer frowns, "Wouldn't using precognition ruin whatever surprise the tanks might offer? Personally, I'd be disappointed if the novelty of the tanks was so easily diminished."

It was thought that with the collapse of the local space program, no one would go looking for the bodies if interred in the rocket. “I’d like to talk to you about that more when we get the chance, by the way. I have some ideas about making a haven for wayward psychics and an academy for me to train more people in Eir’s Light.” Einer fits the crowbar into the seam of the last pod, waiting for Silvano’s signal.
Avatar
The pod splits in half with a puff of air, and more of the milky blue fluid drains. the woman who tumbles out is already breathing, though remains face down on the deck, chest and back hiking as air is pulled in forcefully. "She's drowning on it" Silvano says, though he seems to be straining himself a bit. "The fluid's in her lungs. She's trying to use her powers, and I'm nullifying them" Einer too, feels a bit of the effect of the nullification field

Einer doesn’t answer, instead he rolls the woman onto her side and points to a suction device on the wall, “Get me that. And,” he points to a packet next to it with coiled tubing, “that. I can deep suction her lungs and help pull the fluid out.” He turns to the woman, “I know you’re scared, we’re going to get the fluid out of your lungs.”

She stops thrashing for a moment, long enough for the requested medical supplies to be delivered to you by Silvano

Einer tests the suction, before feeding it into the woman’s mouth. He takes his time to ensure he suctions all the fluid he can get to, and avoids her gag reflex best as he can.

Einer replaces the soft tip suction with a hard tip one, and he hands it to the woman. “Use this, it’ll help get that crud out of the back of your throat. My name is Einer Stjerne and this is Silvano Mazzio. You’re on a planet called Bergasa. You’re safe.”

Einer arrives on the island as the assault is about to be underway. Soldiers are gathering and planning. 200m from the spiked wooden wall of the camp, the 200 soldiers assigned to the task so far surround the masked camp. The masked soldiers have not sallied out yet to try to break the encirclement and have instead focused on making sure their settlement is as hardened as possible, raising walls, fireproofing roofs with mud, and shutting their gates. A watchower in each direction has a trio of archers in it

The buildings nearest the obelisk have their sides torn off at the ferocity of the explosion and shockwave after it, and as you rise, you can see masked figures inside the buildings dissolving, masks dropping, weapons falling to the ground, and the land beginning to return to normal.

Coming into a large clearing after twenty minutes of rucking through the forest, you find a place where large tuffts of fur and bright splashes of red have stained the fallen brown pine needles, Two masks, and several of the masked figures weapons are also amongst the ground debris, though there is no sign of the creature or object responsible for the other half of the fight.

Einer kneels beside the scene, looking for any indication of a blood trail leaving the clearing. To the group he says, “If you want these masks for the bounties, by all means divide them up amongst yourselves. I won’t be surprised if we end up with more than just these two by the time we’re finished here.”

“At the risk of sounding redundant, keep your guard up. The animal was obviously injured, and we don’t know what state it’ll be in when we find it.” Einer continues leading the party down the trail. Any information on the local fauna, especially predators, will be valuable to the settlers.

The Sunblade slows his stride, and mutters, “Silvano, we’re going to need to talk about your demons soon.” He takes a steadying breath and says louder, “Light my way, and guide my blade.” Einer gains confidence with the litany, with his uneasiness fading slightly.

“Try not to give them an excuse to kill us,” Einer says to the pilot, attempting humor at the sight of the large ship bearing down on them. “Nice and easy, and mind your please and thank yous. We’re guests after all.” Satisfied that the puddlejumper is in good hands, he moves back to the common area to speak with the honor guard. “As you’re all aware, the Protectorate is not our biggest fan. Regardless of what happened during the first contact between our nations, we’re here to complete a solemn duty and bring peace to the soldiers found on Balqis. You’re escorting the dog tags as much as you’re escorting me.” (edited)

The puddlejumper is permitted to dock at the first platform, and you're met outside of the airlock in the central park area of the platform by a cultural attache, and a ten strong Myrmidon contingent, a large concentration for the now less than elite, but still talented outfit.

Einer steps through the airlock and bows his head in a formal greeting, “Good day. My name is Einer Stjerne. Who do I have the pleasure in meeting today?”

"I am Radcliffe, and I am here to facilitate your diplomatic stay here on Heras as a guest of the Protectorate. You sent a message ahead stating you had urgent business with us, and we are eager to hear what might merit that kind of attention"

The Sunblade gestures to the SCAF sergeant to step forward, and he takes the small wooden box from her. Einer turns to Radcliffe and presents the box by opening the lid to display the pair of dog tags laying on the cushioned interior. “I was on Balqis and found two of your fallen soldiers. I ensured they were buried, and gave what rights I could though I know not your traditions. Returning these tags is the small solace I could offer them, and their families. The universe is a dark enough place when you die far from home, especially without your family knowing what happened to you. This is me, and the Sovereign Colonies, putting a little Light back into it.” (edited)
22:16
The honor guard takes up positions around Einer and the box. They come to attention in a formal salute, and stand stock still.
Avatar
The myrmidons return it, hand over heart, fingers locked in a fist. The diplomat is not military and is not part of the command structure, but nods solemnly, which is as respectful a gesture as he can get away with here without angering anyone. "I will ensure more senior leadership knows about this. Herald is off planet right now attending to some other business, but expresses her regret that she could not be here herself, especially after our first meeting. Between us, you honored them by burying them on a world that isn't Heras. They will sleep soundly now, and it is better than the rest they would have had here. I'm afraid however this is where the pleasantries end. I've been ordered not to allow planetside deployment for you or any of your men, and I'm afraid I must be firm on that"
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 28-Aug-20 11:57 PM
Einer frowns, disappointment clearly displayed on his face, “Are we permitted to explore the station? It’s been a long trip here, and we’d appreciate the opportunity to not be crammed together on a shuttle. Plus I’ve never been to Heras and have wanted to see it ever since the Protectorate announced their presence last year.”
Avatar
"You're free to explore the station, but there will be guards around any planetside departing shuttlecraft. We're authorized to use deadly force if required. Please, don't make me do that"

“Of course,” Einer says, “Thank you for sharing this much with us.” (Is there a map of the station or is it more abstract? Particularly interested in any memorials, observation decks, libraries, or watering holes. Burning time and talking with people to try and head off rumors and scuttlebutt about SCAF)
Avatar
(its more abstract, never really needed one since all it was responsible for before now was holding a bunch of guns)
00:09
There is a small memorial to the dead of the Garden of Bones, though Cyrus is not mentioned or depicted. It shows a Myrmidon warrior, lying on its back in the ground, with vines and flowers growing around the broken armored warrior. hundreds of names are listed there, along with another segment to the side listing the known Hephestan dead- though the casualty list does not look comprehensive. Even in 2668 , it is hard to do forensic mortuary processes on vapor.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 29-Aug-20 12:18 AM
The Sunblade stands silently at the memorial for a long time. His eyes skim the names, mostly in acknowledgment of their death and in no attempt to remember them all. The longer he stands there, the heavier his shoulders feel. It’d been less than a week since Hagen informed Einer of their new roles, and it was now starting to sink in. Here, he looked at the direct result of a leader’s hubris. Hundreds dead, thousands even, because one man’s ambition. It was hard not to draw parallels to Silvano’s own ambition, and Einer silently promised to do better. Unsure of how much time had passed, he reached into his pocket to pull out a small worry-stone emblazoned with the electric blue starburst design mirrored on his own face. He gingerly places the stone on the memorial beside the Myrnidon, saying, “Even in death, your souls bring Light to the rest of us. Thank you for this moment.” He leaves the area, solemn and deep in thought.

Einer spends the next few hours exploring where he can. He stops several times at observation decks to look down on the world below, frustrated that he was prevented from setting foot there. Einer tries to get a feel for the crew and their general energy in an attempt to determine if EP has hostilities planned against anyone in the near future.
Avatar
The crew is just eager to do their duties well and see their home United again. Nobody really has much to say about SCAF or anyone else for that matter. Almost their entire focus has been on internal affairs and trying to right past wrongs of their former leader

The structure is a large artesian well, though magnified to many times the size such a structure normally is. Large birds and other desert wildlife flock around it, as it’s waters are a readily available source of drinking water. It’s made from a local sandstone though the columns and roof are relatively plain
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 31-Aug-20 05:27 AM
Einer’s boots sink into the sand, and he takes a moment to pick up a handful. He lets it run through his fingers while looking at the structure. “I wonder who built it,” he says to no one in particular. Einer begins looking for an entrance.
Avatar
There does not seem to be anything letting you get into the base of it, but wide stairs almost like a ramp on each of the sides lead up to the massive water collection pool
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 31-Aug-20 04:12 PM
He takes the steps to the top and stands beside the pool. (What does the water look like? I don’t have anything I could use to test it unless there’s pH kits in a medkit lol)
Avatar
The water bubbles gently, as its fed from below. It is green, with some floating patches of algae toward the middle whjere the water does not move much
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 31-Aug-20 06:03 PM
“At least we know it’s not so toxic that nothing can survive in it,” Einer gestured to the algae in the middle. He gently puts his hand into the water, and lifts some water to his nose to smell it.
Avatar
It is a bit brackish and smells slightly acidic, if that can be quantified somehow. You're reminded of old batteries, or a power cell that has not been charged in a while.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 31-Aug-20 06:05 PM
He avoids putting it in his mouth, and lets it run freely from his hand. Instead of drinking it, Einer pulls an empty syringe from his medkit, and grabs a sample of the water. Once done with that, he looks around the edge of the well for any writing or symbols.
Avatar
Everything is incredibly plain, as though ornamentation was meant some day, but the builders never got the chance. The amount of water here easily resembles a very large inland lake, entirely supported, protected, and shaded from an elaborate ceiling, with every joist and beam meant to be redundant and capable of bearing the tremendous weight
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 31-Aug-20 07:04 PM
Einer doesn’t hide his awe at the structure. It seemed so out of place in the middle of the desert, and he couldn’t help but wonder who built it. Also, it’s mere presence brought up the question of how much water existed underground on the planet since most of the surrounding areas appeared to be desert. Maybe it was an aborted attempt at an irrigation system. He can’t help his curiosity, and tries a taste of the water.

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 31-Aug-20 07:08 PM
He spits it out, and gives an internal shrug. Should have expected that, he thinks. Unfortunately, without any more lab equipment, Einer feels like there’s not much more he can do here. He moves back down the stairs to walk a circuit around the well. If he doesn’t find anything, he’ll head back to the shuttle and head to whatever is in the northwest corner of the map.

Einer feels as if scouring the empty city is beyond the scope of his mission here. Instead, he makes a note to speak with the SCAF military leaders to discuss dispatching engineers to Tecmessa and Balqis to work on investigating the buildings found there and determine their viability for colonization. Einer orders the shuttle pilot to overfly the dead forest to the southeast and green area beside it. If there’s nothing obvious from the air, they’ll continue on to Muntsaratz. Einer is eager to be rid of the planet below him after falling into the mass grave.

There are no signs of life in the city, though there is low level energy readings on the ground- the pilot speculates some reactor left on

Einer stands silent for a moment, thinking. Finally, he says, “Bring us down by the reactor. I’ll go take a closer look.”

“Stay here with the ship, and activate the camouflage system. Come running if I call for you,” Einer says to the honor guard soldiers. He walks in the direction indicated to where the power reading was.

It’s not hard to find the reactor complex. It’s the only finished building here and slow steam clouds continue venting from its stacks. It must be tied into ground water or some other source of fissionable material to keep running like this. The complex looks deserted

Peculiar. Einer feels the weight of his sword hanging off his hip, a gentle reminder of the violence he experienced on Bergasa. He makes his way to whatever appears to be the main entrance; eyes open for any automated defenses similar to what Lucas and Vukan found on Actala.
Avatar
There is a main door leading inside that is entirely missing- more like the threshold alone now, reinforced in banded metal
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 03-Sep-20 05:56 PM
Einer pulls out his compad to take pictures of the threshold and exterior of the building. He puts it into video recording mode and hangs it off the front of his shirt to record what he sees inside. Satisfied, he walks through the threshold.

The reactor is sunk into a specialized pit into the ground, where the graphite shielding keeps the low level radiation from getting into the rest of the surrounding area. The control room is on an elevated metal catwalk leading up to an enclosed space at the end of the room.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 03-Sep-20 09:49 PM
(Would the compad have a radiation alert thing like the ones in The Expanse?) Einer cautiously makes his way up to the control room, looking for any manuals or indication as to who built the place.
Avatar
(I don't know what it looks like on that show since I've never seen it. I think that is more the purview of the bioscanner or the ship suit/vac suit)
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 04-Sep-20 04:01 PM
(It’s basically an app on their phone that lets them know if they’ve been exposed to too much radiation.) Einer keeps walking, trusting the designers of the place to not irradiate those working in the control room.
Avatar
THe control room has the hazardous material manual, along with the reactor controls and the instructions to emergency refuel it if needed. It looks like even in a pinch it can use water to jump start a fuel reaction
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 04-Sep-20 05:45 PM
Kind of rough to build this in a desert. Einer takes photos of what he thinks are important pieces of documentation. He looks for any indication as to the power output of the reactor.

(Sure, something with numbers and a gauge that might give an idea of how much it could power. I don’t need hard numbers or anything, and certainly wouldn’t understand it IC or OOC lol. The techs back on Mount Home might, though.)
Avatar
The reactor here is capable of powering the city at a frontier level, but was designed to be replaced with somehing more industrial when the waves of colonists began to increase
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 04-Sep-20 06:29 PM
Einer’s eyebrows raise when he realizes how powerful the reactor is. He’s momentarily nostalgic for the times before the Scream with the readily available technology. Then he remembers living in exile among the members of his order and the moment passes. If Jón could see me now. Einer smiles at the thought, and makes ready to depart the reactor building. He takes a final look around for anything he may have missed.

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 04-Sep-20 06:54 PM
Einer sends a transmission back to Bergasa, recommending it be used for the settlement on the Western Island since Mount Home appears to have enough power currently and the Mishk weren’t kind enough to build a fusion reactor for the SCAF settlers. Satisfied that Tecmessa’s trip was not all horror, Einer requests transport to Muntsaratz.

Muntsaratz is a desert planet that has no visible water on its surface and few clouds. There are strange voids, exactly 10km apart one the surface scan return, where scanning beams have either been absorbed or reflected. This distance between the gaps does not change no matter what side of the planet is scanned or how many attempts are made Locals have said that the pillars were pre-scream objects used to bind some kind of Dragon like creature to permanent exile beneath the planets crust, but ever since the Scream, there have been earthquakes and even reports of howling from underground. The earthquakes have been getting more frequent.

Einer continues forward, willing to sustain mild burns in order to find the cause for the heat. The hairs on the back of his neck stand up, and he begins to feel the sensitive skin on the tops of his ears burn. He slows his stride in order to minimize the sounds of his approach down the cave.
Avatar
The stride is even, calm, and as you descend to 100m below the ground the cavern begins to widen into an incredibly dark central chamber. Gentle puffs of flame seem to radiate out in time with what sounds like heavy , slumbering breathing.

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Sep-20 06:33 AM
He stops, feeling the breathing through the soles of his boots. After a moment, he slowly pulls his binoculars out of his pack and flicks on the low-light settings to scan the chamber beyond.
Avatar
Through the light amplifying effect of the goggles you're able to see a wurmling, 30m away from you across the chamber floor. It breathes deeply, wings draped over it like sailcloth's. Spiked pinions extend from the wing joints, each tip as long as a spearhead. Every breath exhales a dribble of molten metal across its jaws, but it does not seem to be harmed by it, rather it seems a product of the supernova furnace inside its chest. It stirs gently, as though in the grip of some sort of animal nightmare, before stretching and becoming still again, the breathing continuing

Heavily wounded, bleeding heavily and struggling to move even in the simplest ways the dragon lunges forward with the last of its strength. Its unable to get to the new arrivals without leaving its flank exposed to you, and its claws dash into the ground as you spring over them. The dragon's jaws snatch you from the air, biting down (24/9) hard, and it shakes its jaw like a wolf trying to pull the entrails from a prey beast

(6hp) Einer chokes out a gasp. He rolls onto his hands and knees. His chest heaves. Shakily, the sunblade reaches out to grab his sword nearby. The contact with the weapon seems to invigorate him. Einer unsteadily gets his feet under him, swaying as he stands upright. He stumbles over to the dragon's corpse, waving away the marines reaching out to help him. Beside the dragon, he falls to his knees and puts his hand against its neck, "I'm sorry it ended like this. Thank you for the experience. I hope you find peace on the other side." With that, Einer rises and raises his sword above his head. It comes down swiftly to decapitate the dead beast. To the marines he says, "Thank you. You saved my life and liberated the planet. You will be rewarded for your bravery. Please contact the puddlejumper and have them request Insight to meet us here in order to take the dragon's corpse home with us. We'll take the head to the nomads as proof that we killed the beast. Muntsaratz will be a Sovereign Colony."

It is strange to feel like I’m returning home. He notes the Colossus holding a stationkeeping orbit between the two cities found by Selgar. Any sense of comfort is lost at that sight, a reminder that the Mishk still had to be dealt with. He directs the puddlejumper to Mount Home in order to requisition a gravflyer and squad to take him to the other city.
Avatar
Reports in the field come in that agent Ibros has failed in her negotiation attempt, succumbing to the corrupting effect of the mask. Selgar is working to deal with the situation, but diplomacy has yet passed

Einer looks crestfallen, "working to deal with the situation" didn't exactly fill him with confidence that Ibros hadn't been injured in some way. He looks to the assembled honor guard, "Let's get the grav flyer up and running. We'll fly near Selgar's position to make sure they don't need help or evac for any reason and then continue on to our observation position."

Avatar
The skyline is difficult to penetrate, and with the buildings standing now, you're unable to see it, no doublt it is nestled into the skyline somewhere
Avatar
A reply comes shortly from Selgar. Similar situation here, cannot confirm exact obelisk location. I do not think it is worth risking exposing ourselves to pinpoint it, we'll either be able to see it as the infrastructure crumbles or the place will become a crater.

"While I agree it's risky for the limited reward if we fail, if we were to succeed we could instead collect the site recouping any loss that would be sustained otherwise."
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 27-Sep-20 07:16 PM
“What you’re asking for will add hours or even days to the strike as we reposition elements, and it’s more than a risk to yourself. You’re asking others to take on the same risk. I don’t think your skill in piloting would stop the obelisk from hitting you. It shoots lightning and very nearly shot down Vukan’s ship. And that was a weaker obelisk than what we have here. We frankly don’t know what it’s capable of.”
Avatar
"I understand Sir. In the end it is your say so I just want the opportunity to make something of what these Natives made. With ghe fact we now have manpower and money coming in one asset would only be a drop in a bucket at this point. I belive I can do it. But the choice is yours."

Killer Kai's plane goes down, struck by the shockwave after the bolts narrowly missed it. There is an explosion from within the core of the city, as the iron rain finally begins pulverizing the village. Buildings collapse, crack, and shatter at the kinetic force, and the chapel has all of its stained glass and carved imagery of Lord Mazzio breaks apart to scatter into the road below. There is a massive mushroom cloud of dust obscuring your vision of the city for long moments, before the crumbling cathedral and heavily damaged obelisk stands alone, amid a sea of destruction

The quintet of supersonic craft abruptly veer away after letting loose fifteen puffs of smoke and looking to put distance between them and the sputtering obelisk remains. It only takes seconds for the hyrad missiles to impact the site, kicking more dust and debris into the already choked air.

The uneasiness he feels towards the Mishk was felt like a lead ball in his stomach, still present despite the successful destruction of the city. He sighs while straightening up. _Probably won’t feel better about these creatures until I know why and how they’re here. Beyond simply because ‘Silvano did it’. Einer leaves the city ruins to return to Mount Home. Kayden Zayre of the Protectorate has promised to plead the case of mutual military action against these monsters to their council, but for now we have no official aid. “I have a few ideas that might work for that. It may be worth it to simply move the population of Balqis here. Another distant possibility is consolidating the Unn population here as well, if you want to live on a planet full of psychics who don’t get along with each other. That’s more of an ease to protect them idea more than anything else, though.”

“Right,” Einer thinks, “the Chamber members are far dispersed at the moment. I’m sure someone somewhere will find people meeting the requirements.” Einer sighs, “I wish I could stay longer. There’s so much I want to discuss with you but so little time to go over all of it while still ensuring we’re taking the right steps to deal with this new threat. The last thing I ask is a personal request. I’d like to start a new academy on Bergasa. It’d train a new generation of Facets for Eir but also act as a place for psychics to come study and understand their powers. I’d like your permission and any recommendation you may have for a metapsionic to work for me. I have very little understanding of how psychics function, but I still want them to have a safe place to grow.”
Avatar
"Without being kept into the loop as to the wider workings of my organization, I can't grant this right now. I'd like to be able to keep an eye on my own domain, you understand. When Bergasa is safe again, we will talk, and see how we can get this dream of yours to proceed"

Einer nods, “That’s more than reasonable. I hope we can loop you in soon. It’s no secret people are displeased with the Triumvirate Hagen proposed. Maybe not so much with the decentralization of the power, but more with how it happened.”

“As long as it’s working for now. It sounds like we both have reason to want to bring this crisis to an end soon, and set things with SCAF right once again”

After checking in with the leadership at Mount Home, Einer requests a helicopter to fly him to the construction taking place at the location he specified for his sanctum. A submarine is prepared in the underhangar of Mount Home- where the very first scout foils deployed just months ago. A modest fleet uses the place as a port now, though one day there will likely be dozens of bases and dockyards scattered across the mainland

It is difficult not to feel overwhelmed with the rapid changes the Sovereign Colonies are going through. Einer instead chooses to focus on the task at hand, moving to the prepared submarine and speaking with the two crewmembers, “Is she ready to depart?”
Avatar
"Everything but the climbing aboard and buttoning up. Got calm seas for a few days, weather is cooperating with us at least"

“Small victories, then,” Einer says with a tired smile, “Let’s push off then and get these ocean floors mapped. I’m due back on Actaia soon as it is.”
Avatar
There is a clank as the hatch shuts behind you and the flywheel spins. A few drops of water trickle in but its nothing from the outside. Electric engines come on, and there is a gently slump as the launch ramp gently pushes the submarine into the water, and on the surface it begins chugging out to open water- the bright blue sky and the shining sun high in the air above you.

Einer does his best to stay out of the crew’s way while still learning what he needs to to keep it operating. He’s well aware that his spot here took another trained crewmember off the roster and he doesn’t want to appear as a liability. He directs them to start clearing the hex coordinates in the NW sector of the sea surrounding Mount Home.
Avatar
The sub begins making ready to dive and you're called to the small command center to stand with the captain, at the heart of all the sensor technology. The viewscreens at the front of the bridge begin to resolve, the hexagonal flat panels now showing a reconstructed and streamed view of the ocean floor in front of the sub. It is almost like looking directly out a window. the sea is blue green, and calm, and fish begin swimming away as the dark spear of metal passes by the reefs. It reminds you that almost no wildlife surveys have ever taken place on this world yet

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 05-Oct-20 10:28 PM
We’ve been so busy killing and trying to survive, we haven’t taken the time to explore and appreciate the world Silvano made for us. Einer feels the weight of all the tasks to complete weighing on him like the pressure of the water around them. He doesn’t say much, wrapped up in his own thoughts while watching the view screen. He does direct the crew to save any photos of interesting sea life and structures for further analysis.
22:28
(I’m not sure if we could take physical samples since it’s a sub built to blow stuff up and not explore)

Well, mostly. I believe we're in the endgame when it comes to the Mishk, but I discovered a roadblock that makes things difficult. I'll start from the beginning. There's a pause while he collects his thoughts, literally, and begins, We, Hagen and I, discovered a link between you and the Mishk early on. It is better to think of them as Returned but I tried to downplay that name in order to protect the secret. The Returned are psychic echoes of the people and beasts you've killed. Each one has memories of their life before Bergasa, and the masks link them to the obelisks, which in turn link them to you. Their behavior and orders mirrored the ones you gave us in regards to settling the planet and making it ready for colonization. To the Returned, we're the dangerous natives. They function on a strict set of guidelines, and appear to be unable to operate outside of it. I don't have the impression that the Returned are able to improvise. They build settlements around the obelisks, and work to protect them. As we destroy the obelisks, larger settlements are found and the obelisks appear to grow in strength. This is why I'm hesitant to mount any sizable attack on the underwater city found as it is probably the strongest and most dangerous we've come across. But, this is why Hagen recommended giving him and me more authority over SCAF. It kept you out of the loop and potentially allowed us to operate around the guidelines you had inadvertantly established for the Returned.
18:51
And now that you know, there's little need for the Triumvirate to continue.
Avatar
So you're suggesting this might be the final city, and now since I know about it, I'm free to take direct action
19:15
and in doing so, there's no reason to compartmentalize information anymore
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Oct-20 07:16 PM
That is the idea, yes.
19:18
There is also a language that the Returned are using in their masks and obelisks that we can't make any sense of. Selgar has been working on it, to my understanding.
Avatar
Indeed. I will return to Mount Home for a time, to examine what you have found and prepare for what I hope to be the final strike. I will officially dissolve the Triumvirate and you are given permission to retire, and construct your sanctum in peace. Use it for good. For the good of all SCAF
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Oct-20 08:24 PM
Thank you, Lord Mazzio. Please don’t hesitate to ask me for aid if you or SCAF requires it.
Avatar
Mazzio dissolves the connection, but not before through the link you hear him giving orders to the others on the ground, getting his chosen retainers together for the dancing teleport to Bergasa, to finish this for good
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 13-Oct-20 09:28 PM
Einer directs the pilot to set a course back for Mount Home, anticipating that the Mishk problem will be resolved before he gets back.
Avatar
(I think Selgar and you will be the ones running this then, the actual asking of who was wanting to be involved sorta fizzled out, so once the ruin exploration is done we'll circle back)

(Alright we can pick up here with you two heading south. Did we want to check the lab or reactor at all or push?
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 29-Oct-20 01:42 AM
(I’m cool if Selgar wants to poke around a bit. I’ll keep the pesky baddies off of him.)
Avatar
(Selgar would want to push South towards the hangar, if anything is left standing at the end of this there will be plenty of time to check things out.)
Avatar
Pushing south, what passes for the medical center or field hospital is the first thing you encounter. It is empty of casualties right now, as well as any sort of Masked doctors. Medical equipment that looks more akin to alchemy or brewing tools, or a witch's hut line the shelves and walls, along with equipment you cannot identify. Dozens of masks sit in a bin, each one lovingly placed there, next to a large hyperbaric looking chamber.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 29-Oct-20 04:32 AM
Einer lets his faceshield depolarise and scans the room, "This is bizarre. I find myself surprised everytime we find evidence of the Mishk creating more complex infrastructure. What good is medical equipment to psychically anchored creatures?"
Avatar
Two masked techs walk out of a side room, annexed in the wall, and are oblivious to your presence. THeir masks are a jade color rather than the silver or bronze of warriors. They mvoe to the large hyperbaric like tank, and the ashen mist that the Masked make when they die is swirling inside. One picks up a mask, and places it into a slot at the bottom of the machine. It is sucked up inside, and suspended as the ashen particles swirl and congeal into something like a humanoid form- just beginning to take shape
Avatar
Selgar silently looks over to Einer as the scene unfolds. I was going to hazard a guess, but it seems they have provided their answer. Selgar reaches out his free hand and grasps at something unssen in the air before him, and an invisible force squeezes on the tank. (Using Telekinetic Manipulation to try to crush the tank, if it's like normal glass it probably just breaks but it's 4d6 damage per round if not.)
Avatar
(it would break when the pressure is applied to it)
19:58
The tank begins to spider web and crack as the 'doctors' begin backing away
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 29-Oct-20 08:07 PM
“Ah,” Einer says while taking a wary step back, “I see you’re the experiment by doing type of scientist.”
Avatar
"Just practicing some basic eugenics to give us one less opponent. If the others present no opposition we should move on."
Avatar
The two doctors begin rushing forwards, 20m away around the ruins of their machine. THey're not armed, but it seems to not be a problem for them.
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 29-Oct-20 09:45 PM
“Opposition presented,” Einer says. His face shield polarizes and he lunges forward. (Initiative?)

Avatar
(the tank is not flattened but it is ruined)
Avatar
(Good enough for me. Clarifying questions on battle situation, how high is the ceiling and how close together in meters are the two Mishk?)
Avatar
(the minsk are within 5 of each other, so effectively adjacent for SWN purposes. the ceiling is 15m high)
Avatar
(Well I have a technique that has a dimensional limit of 3 meters so 15 feet, but if the ceiling is 45 feet high I don't think it matters. What's the turn order?)
Avatar
You, Masked, Einer)
Avatar
A soft blue glow envelops the pair and Selgar lifts into the air, his free hand clawing into the air as a dull metallic cage forms around one of the Masked and a shot erupts from the mag pistol. (Instant action activating Telekinetic Flight on myself and Einer, move action to move up to basically the ceiling, on turn action Tangible Force Construct a cage on one of them, main action firing pistol at the other one. Two effort used, attack is 23 for 6 plus 4 fire damage.)

Einer nods, “None of it will make me feel better. They’re not exactly operating under their own volition here. They exist because Silvano, and they’re dying again because of him.”
21:00
He follows Selgar.

Moving into a temporary housing area the left and right side of the 10m wide hallway are lined with habitation cells where the masked would live the simulacrum of their lives
22:31
The doors are closed and pressurized
Avatar
Selgar's face contorts into a grim smile as the pair advance down the hallway. "I personally hope that they find more peace once banished back to metaspace than in their false lives here, but I also hope I never find out firsthand." As the small hab cells come into view he glances towards Einer. "I doubt there's anything of value in these rooms, my vote is we move on the large bay to the South."

Selgar hears a faint scraping from behind the doors on the eastern side of the hallway. There are things behind the doors, and after a moment of listening, the quiet but not entirely silent rasp of the Mishk lying in wait can be heard behind the doors, as they quietly talk to one another
Avatar
Selgar raises his free hand mid-stride and looks at Einer, sending his thoughts. Door on the left, there's a couple behind it. Have to assume they're hostile, have any ideas? (How wide and far apart are the doors, and how many are there?)
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 02-Nov-20 08:07 PM
Einer stops, Trigger the trap now rather than when they’ll have us surrounded?
Avatar
(six doors, about 5m apart on the walls, the door widths are your standard entry door so 34ish inches)
Avatar
Selgar backs up to the corner the pair just rounded for a bit of cover, nods to Einer and takes a moment to straighten his tie, then telekinetically knocks on the first door with his pistol pointed down the hallway.
Avatar
The hatch opens as three masked soldiers emerge , combat rifles sweeping the hallway (I’d say you’d have a surprise round here)

(I have a sword, could jump up to them if you want to shoot first?)
Avatar
Selgar takes aim and fires at the nearest soldier, attempting to keep most of his body shielded by the corner. (16 for 10+4fire)

Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 03-Nov-20 05:40 PM
Einer dashes forward to pull all of them into melee. (28/15 after armsman. 10 shock for everyone I’m next to after Armsman)
Avatar
One of the Mishk falls apart as the rifle round strikes it, setting the floating ashes aflame and the upward scattering particles spread through the air, dusting away. Another is struck down by Einer's blade, and the clumsy return blow is hastily batted aside (got a -1 with the -4 rifle in melee penalty)
Avatar
Selgar takes aim down the hall but holds his fire for the moment. (Not going to risk hittting Einer with my -1 Shoot.)

Einer dips under the Mishk's attempt to shoot him, and stabs up into its chest. (27/10)

It takes a ponderous step backward, wounded but not dead.

Avatar
(6 to hit ) The embattled Mishk swings but misses terribly, the rifle smacking against the deck before rising erratically. A hatch door opens to the left, and 3 more of them pour out to try to pile in with Einer, though based on the amount of noise you heard, it seems like this is all of them
Avatar
(Do I have a clear shot on any before they're all in melee?)
Avatar
(yes, the remaining 3 essentially ended their move in the hallway and have not yet engaged which i see now was not very clearly described)
Avatar
Catching a brief glimpse of a clean target, Selgar takes another shot, but as he pulls the trigger the weapon makes a loud clicking sound and he realizes his last shot caused the specialized ammunition to jam before reaching the chamber. Selgar brings his free hand to manually unjam the weapon, cursing it. "You have one job dammit!" (Natural 3 on the roll so the Dragonfire round misfires.)
Avatar
The jam is cleared after a moment, and the remaining masked pile in, one comes close to landing a clean blow, but Einer turns away at the last minute
15:03
(didnt get above a 16)
Avatar
As the cluster becomes a hectic mess Selgar decides his odds of hitting his ally are slim enough to justify the risk, so once he clears the jam he decides to take another shot... Only to have the pistol not even click, and he glares at it and starts somewhat aggressively shaking it and smacking the hilt against his free hand, growling. "I'm refunding you, you worthless manufacturing defect!" (Another misfire.)

Einer spins as he dodges the strikes. When he finds his footing again, he’s face to face with the leftmost of the trio. Einer brings his sword down in a sweep to catch it in the shoulder. (22/10)
Avatar
The one you'd been fighting vanishes, run through by the blade and dissolving upwards as these are known to do. The remaining masked begin striking with rifle butts and clubbing blows from their weapons, though none of them are able to get past your singing sword or your stout armor. Selgar's weapon clears, the specialized ammunition re-feeding. (Selgar)
Avatar
Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Selgar aims and pulls the trigger and nearly drops the pistol when it actually fires this time. (14 for 10 and 2 fire damage.)

A second Mishk burns, the fire spreading as the round tip and its secondary payload spreads all over its back. Einer is now faced with just two

Calm returns to the corridor after a few moments, though the habitation room doors all remain open
Avatar
Selgar heaves a sigh and curses his pistol one last time before holstering it. "Well it's certainly good you're here, the manual would have you think these things fire themselves... Where did you learn to swing a sword like that? Twice I thought for sure you cut your own arm off, it's so hard to follow the speed..."
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 06-Nov-20 10:12 PM
Einer stands straight as the last Mishk disappears. A quick shake of his arm turns his force pavis off with a crackle. To Selgar, Einer says, “My teacher, Jón. He took the time to show me Eir and her way. It’s largely spiritual, but a major component of her teachings is to advocate for those who are unable to. Sometimes that means fighting for them.” Einer sheaths his sword and grimaces, “Jón was always quick to use his sword, but I preferred other solutions. I guess I never really got away from it, though. Especially after coming here to help make Silvano’s dream a reality.”
Avatar
"Well that must have taken months, it's certainly impressive. At any rate it seems neither of us were injured, so let's keep moving." Selgar glances in the hab rooms as he passes. (Guessing nothing interesting, but wouldn't walk by without looking.)

“More like years, but I made the most improvement after the Scream.” Einer begins walking through the habitation block towards the large bay.
Avatar
The habitation block is a wagon wheel like structure with a central chamber in the middle. The station rumbles and there is a shriek or howl of something entirely unnatural from the floor below
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 08-Nov-20 02:50 AM
“That,” Einer says, “can’t be good.”
Avatar
Selgar frowns. "I'd go so far as to say it's probably not even neutral... I suppose all we can do is press on?"
Avatar
You have a brief flash of Lord Mazzio returning to the central command chamber. He does not command you directly, but you can see Vukan and Jarl with him. Ahead of you, the habitation and farming section remains presumably inhabited, and the sounds of more Mishk elite assembling for war rings through the halls. There is no way of knowing how many are ahead

“Do we go back and help or do we press on and try to find the obelisk? Whatever they’re dealing with will probably be fixed by destroying the obelisk.”
Avatar
Selgar frowns as he receives the brief vision. "Probably... But we're still fairly close to the command center, and perhaps the other two can join us if they did not find anything on the North segment. I doubt Silvano would have gathered them if it wasn't important, I think it's worth the small delay to check back with the group."
Avatar
Karre Mondragon(Timothy) 09-Nov-20 08:31 AM
Einer nods. To Silvano he thinks, We’re coming back. The two of us are better off adding to your group for now to consolidate.
